Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport announced last month that it’s getting a €10 billion facelift over the next decade.

A press release stated that the goals of the large-scale renovation are to make the flight hub a more sustainable, quiet, and comfortable space for travelers and workers.

One of the major elements of Schiphol Airport’s upgrade will be the construction of its “New Terminal South.” The flight hub teased that the building will be a haven for those who hate hectic and overstimulating travel days. The airport shared that the new wing will be a spacious, light-filled terminal where there’s “peace and quiet.” Moreover, travelers and workers will be able to walk to anything they may need, all “under one roof.”

Schiphol Airport is getting renovated traveler spaces in addition to the new almost 6,000-square-foot American Express Centurion Lounge expected to open in 2026. Travelers can also anticipate better accessibility and more public transportation to and from the flight hub, which welcomed 66.8 million passengers last year.

“We want to return to the top three European hub airports by delivering quality to travelers, employees, and airlines. At the same time, we want to strike a balance with our environment and society as a whole,” noted Schiphol.

Improving working conditions for employees is also at the forefront of the upgrade. The press release stated that modernization will help make “working at the airport healthier and less strenuous.” New features promised include robots and systems to handle baggage more quickly, and to reduce exposure to ultrafine particles, which are linked to toxic air.

“For more than a century, Schiphol has been a home for world travelers, a hub for goods and a cornerstone of our economy,” said the airport’s CEO Pieter van Oord. “With our plans for the future, we want to maintain and strengthen our position and contribute to the progress of the Netherlands. Our future can be summarized in two words: quality and balance. This is how we keep the Netherlands moving and make a small country great. With a high-quality airport that serves the Netherlands.”

Amsterdam is a bucket list location for many, known for its beautiful canals, picture-perfect architecture, Red Light District, cannabis “coffee shops,” and legendary bike lanes. A city filled with histories to explore, Schiphol Airport, located just 15 minutes away by train, is Amsterdam’s gateway.
